Presentation to Portgordon Heritage Group at the 'Lampie Hoose' February 2008.
At the February meeting of Portgordon Heritage Group, representatives of Portgordon Community Harbour Group were invited to give a presentation on the aims of the Group including a progress report. Chairman Ron Billing and Secretary Bob Thomson duly attended and this is a summary of the presentation
Ron thanked the Heritage Group for the invitation and opened proceedings with a brief overview of the scheme. Bob continued with a more detailed report on the Groups aims to give the Community a harbour it undoubtedly deserves and then followed with an account of progress to date including matters regarded as key events. Following this, Ron and Bob went on to give details of proposals for the future whilst at the same time explaining that timings are linked to steps in progress and will be affected by different aspects, mainly legal and logistical, of the scheme. Both speakers emphasised there will be hurdles to overcome, however there are promising allies on board in the form of The Highlands and Islands Enterprise network (HIE) and Crown Estates, both of whom are providing assistance.
The speakers believe developing the harbour will have a positive bearing on local life that will enhance the village and surrounding area. Highlighting this point Bob referred to the annual Gala Day during which the Group asks other Groups within the village to come along and join in, at no cost to themselves, and take the opportunity to promote and perhaps even raise funds for their particular organisation thus making it a truly community event.
The audience listened intently and welcomed the opportunity to ask questions. It became clear that rumours abound regarding the Groups progress and happily any speculation was dispelled as questions were answered positively and honestly.
The event went well with an encouraging response from the audience. Feedback indicated a high level of support for the Harbour Groups aims. Ron and Bob declared afterwards they considered the event well worthwhile and found the Heritage Groups feeling for the Village as a whole, including the proposals for the harbour, quite stimulating.
